Meeting the challenge of hard-to-abate value chain emissions

The Center for Green Market Activation™ (GMA) is a US-based, globally focused nonprofit that works with climate-leading companies and non-profits to jump start new markets in green fuels and materials. Through innovative book-and-claim systems, new and creative procurement approaches, and demand aggregating buyers’ alliances, GMA catalyzes and scales the uptake of low- and zero-carbon goods and services in the hardest-to-abate sectors.

GMA’s organizational design combines shared expertise and infrastructure with sector-specific programs. By consolidating a range of value chain mitigation initiatives under a single non-profit umbrella, we help companies ramp up their Scope 3 mitigation quickly, starting in one sector and easily moving into another.

  • Up to 95% of corporate emissions lie within Scope 3

  • Over 7K companies and growing have set Scope 3 targets under SBTi

  • Demand aggregation + new business models can scale green markets

Where we specialize

GMA’s focus on book-and-claim and joint procurement allows us to drive demand for low-carbon goods and services while enhancing the transparency of corporate climate action and enforcing environmentally rigorous standards across all transactions.

Catalyzing the green transition

Through our buyers’ alliance model, GMA brings together organizations committed to accelerating complex value chain decarbonization. Our proven ability to aggregate demand and channel investment to nascent green commodity suppliers helps both suppliers and customers reach their full potential in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Aviation

The Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA) was launched in 2021 by the Environmental Defense Fund and RMI to scale the uptake of high integrity sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by enabling aviation customers to credibly and transparently reduce their scope 3 aviation emissions by supporting SAF. GMA’s CEO spearheaded its launch and GMA serves as the secretariat of SABA.

  • Maritime

Launched in 2023 by the Aspen Institute and supported by GMA, the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) seeks to accelerate commercial deployment of zero-emission (ZE) shipping, enable economies of scale, and help cargo owners maximize emissions reduction beyond what any one freight buyer could accomplish alone.

  • Cement and Concrete

GMA is helping spur production of low-carbon cement and concrete by bringing together producers of low-carbon concrete with companies that have concrete emissions in their Scope 3 inventories. GMA Concrete’s book-and-claim system will allow downstream customers to purchase environmental attributes from low-carbon concrete production, while managing partnership and project development between members and producers.

  • Heavy Duty Trucking

GMA is supporting first-of-their-kind, scalable partnerships focused on bringing together companies seeking to reduce scope 3 emissions from heavy-duty transportation and fleet owners interested in decarbonization, with the goal of significantly increasing the number of zero emission vehicles on the road. The buyer’s alliance, “GMA Trucking”, is accepting additional members now and will be publishing its first RFP for zero emission trucking service projects in the coming months.

The AIM Platform

A partnership with C2ES and Gold Standard, the AIM Platform is focused on developing the definitive standard for accounting, claiming and reporting the impacts of value chain interventions towards corporate climate targets.
