About

The Center for Green Market Activation (GMA) – a US-based, globally focused nonprofit – fills a previously unmet need within the climate solutions ecosystem for a cross-sector, market-based approach to decarbonizing hard-to-abate value chain emissions. By leveraging bookand- claim along with demand-aggregating buyers’ alliances, GMA helps companies ramp up Scope 3 mitigation quickly while channeling new funding to accelerate commercial scale production of critical climate technologies.

People

Kim Carnahan
Founder and CEO

Kim Carnahan has over 15 years of experience in climate change and energy, including serving as the Chief Negotiator for Climate Change at the US Department of State. Over nearly a decade at the State Department, she managed the 13-government agency team that negotiated the Paris Agreement and its implementing guidance as well as energy and environment agreements at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and International Maritime Organization (IMO). She has a deep background in environmental markets, having previously served as the International Policy Director at the International Emissions Trading Association, as well as in alternative fuels and management consulting, thanks to her time as Senior Director for Net Zero Fuels and Market-Based Solutions at ENGIE Impact, a global energy and climate consulting firm. Kim spearheaded the launch of the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA) in 2021, in partnership with environmental NGOs and nearly 2 dozen major global corporations. She continues to manage SABA, which enables companies to decarbonize air transport through investment in sustainable aviation fuel, and is currently developing similar initiatives in adjacent sectors.

Ellen Palmer
Chief Finance & Operations Officer

Ellen is a seasoned professional with over 15 years of experience in finance and operational leadership, specializing in climate and energy sectors. At GMA, she plays a pivotal role in overseeing finance, operations, and human resources, ensuring the organization’s short and long-term health.

Prior to her current position, Ellen served as the CFO/COO at Fresh Energy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to shaping clean energy policy in Minnesota and producing the national Energy News Network. She also served as the CFO/COO and sustainability director at a climate-positive outdoor apparel company. Ellen specializes in bringing teams and missions to life through sound financial guidance and management, human resource development, and effective systems and processes that support substantial organizational growth. She holds a bachelors degree in Environmental Studies and an MBA, and is an accreditation executive leadership coach.

Andre de Fontaine
Senior Director

Andre has more than a decade of experience managing complex energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, with a special focus on developing and managing multi-stakeholder initiatives. Previously, at ENGIE Impact, he led the firm’s green fuels work in the United States, and helped private companies, state governments and non-profit organizations evaluate clean hydrogen and other alternative fuels technologies and policies. He also led the first-ever collective procurement for sustainable aviation fuel on behalf of the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance. Before joining ENGIE, Andre worked on industrial decarbonization at the U.S. Department of Energy, where he launched the Better Plants program, a voluntary energy efficiency partnership consisting of some of the world’s largest manufacturing companies. Prior to DOE, he was a Fellow at the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, where he helped advance market-based climate policies and engagement with the Center’s Business Environmental Leadership Council. ​Andre has a BA in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego and an MA in Public Policy from Georgetown University.

Kari Pederson
Chief of Staff, Senior Advisor

As the Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor at GMA, Kari brings a unique blend of experience in corporate operations and executive communications, coupled with a deep background in the negotiation of U.S. climate policy and management of federally-funded climate and energy programs. In her current role, she specializes in end-to-end campaign creation, strategy, and implementation, as well as other special projects related to GMA’s efforts.

Kari most recently served as the deputy lead for the CEO of Apple’s Executive Operations team where she was responsible for providing comprehensive principal management for the CEO and other executives by driving high-impact communication strategies, leading collaborative project management, and successfully managing executive presence at key global events. Prior to Apple, she spent nearly seven years working in the climate and energy space in government, most notably as climate officer and negotiator at the U.S. State Department where she focused on advancing U.S. climate change adaptation priorities on the global stage.

Dan Smith
Program Director

Dan has over 15 years of experience in environmental and sustainability management and leadership in the energy and logistics sectors. Before joining GMA, Dan led decarbonization program work, developed climate mitigation products, and developed greenhouse gas emission accounting and target setting methods at Smart Freight Centre, a transportation emissions focused non-governmental organization. This work included serving as lead author on frameworks to accelerate the uptake of greenhouse gas emission reduction tools and technologies for heavy transport.

Prior to Smart Freight Centre, Dan led the development and adoption of sustainability strategy, greenhouse gas emission data management, and domestic and international environmental policy engagement for one of the largest US marine transportation and logistics companies. Dan has also managed environmental emergency response operations, environmental compliance, and contaminated site remediation, as well as supporting the development of US federal pollution prevention regulations. At GMA, Dan leads on policy and regulatory issues, an emerging initiative on chemicals, and is a lead advisor for the AIM Platform.

Jackie Brew
Senior Manager, Aviation

Jackie brings a decade of expertise in the energy and consulting sectors, specializing in clean fuels and supply chain decarbonization. As a former Senior Manager at ENGIE Impact, Jackie led regional and corporate energy transition strategies. Notable projects include crafting a hydrogen roadmap for Connecticut and advising tech clients on how to achieve their near-term supply chain emission reduction targets.

Before joining ENGIE Impact, Jackie was part of McKinsey & Company’s sustainability practice, where she advised industrial clients on navigating the energy transition. Her career began at Shell as a process engineer, focusing on refinery energy efficiency and optimizing jet fuel production.

Jackie holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Energy Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is based in New York.

Alison Greene
Communications Manager

As Communications Manager, Alison brings more than 10 years of experience in the energy and climate space developing, coordinating, and executing initiatives to communicate value proposition, build and strengthen brand awareness and reputation, and drive engagement. At GMA, she manages multi-disciplinary communications efforts.

Prior to her current role, Alison was Director of Marketing & Communications for Anew Climate, where she played a key role in the company’s branding and messaging efforts prior to and in conjunction with its formation. She also spent over 6 years in the traditional energy services industry where she helped champion emerging sustainability communications initiatives. Alison has successfully directed internal and external communications, digital content and campaigns, events, and branding campaigns in close collaboration with executive teams. She holds a BS in Mass Communications from Boston University and lives in Roswell, Georgia.

Clayton Gerber
Program Manager

As a Program Manager at GMA, Clayton leads sectoral initiatives to design market-based initiatives and systems to drive resources towards decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors. He leverages his sustainability consulting and economic background to bring an analytical, strategic, and environmental perspective to program design. He is currently leading AIM’s efforts in decarbonizing heavy-duty trucking and cement/concrete.

Prior to Neoteric/GMA, Clayton was a consultant at ENGIE Impact helping corporate clients establish, plan for, and operationalize their GHG reduction strategy. Clayton specialized on market-based mechanisms for innovative technologies and transportation fleet decarbonization across industries such as technology, consumer products, and semiconductors. Before that, he was a consultant at Novantas (now Curinos) advising financial institutions on their pricing strategy and network transformation. Clayton holds a BA in Economics with a minor in Sustainability and Environmental Management from the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Oakland, CA.

Ashini Khetpal
Program Manager

Ashini has a background in business strategy with experience in management consulting and startup strategy. In her role at GMA, she provides operational and analytical support for project teams, manages stakeholders across GMA’s initiatives, and coordinates business operations.

Prior to Neoteric/GMA, Ashini was on the Strategy and B2B Ops team at Impossible Foods, where she led special projects to enable data-driven decision-making and accelerate the company’s progress toward its sustainability mission. Before that, she was a consultant at EY-Parthenon, specializing in commercial due diligence efforts for investment firms. Ashini holds a BA in Chemistry from Williams College.

Joan Gibbons
Program Manager, Cement & Concrete

As a program manager at GMA, Joan Gibbons is leveraging her experience in the construction and real estate industry to bring practical expertise in low-carbon concrete procurement to the cement and concrete initiative.

Prior to GMA, Joan was a Sustainability Manager at Lendlease Construction providing expert sustainability support, guidance, and governance to construction project teams across Lendlease’s national portfolio. She specialized in guiding low-carbon procurement for high-impact materials with embodied carbon modeling and led initiatives to reduce jobsite GHG emissions. Her career began on the operations side of Lendlease Construction, managing trades on several mixed-use residential high-rise development projects in San Franscisco.

Joan holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a LEED AP BD+C accredited professional. She is based in San Francisco.

Edmond Yi
Program Associate, Alternative Fuels and GHG Accounting

Edmond is an engineer with diverse experience in energy policy and climate regulation. In his role at GMA, he works with fuel producers and aviation customers to drive the uptake of high-integrity sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) into a quickly evolving market.

In his prior work, Edmond leveraged his experience with energy policy and life cycle assessment to contribute to the development of electricity transmission infrastructure and power markets, as well as implement regulatory programs to reduce the climate impacts of transportation fuels. During his time at the California Air Resources Board, Edmond was an Air Resources Engineer and led the verification process for lifecycle carbon intensities for LCFS-certified fuel pathways. Most recently, Edmond worked at the California Public Utilities Commission as the project manager for the Public Advocate’s Office for multiple transmission infrastructure permitting proceedings.

Edmond holds a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering and an MS in Energy, Civil Infrastructure, and Climate from UC Berkeley.

Sam Pearl Schwartz
Program Associate

Sam has a background in international energy and climate policy with experience supporting strategic partnerships and membership-driven organizations within the voluntary market. In his role at GMA, he manages the Advanced and Indirect Mitigation (AIM) Platform and provides support to decarbonize heavy-duty trucking.

Prior to Neoteric/GMA, Sam worked on the Next Generation Carbon Free Electricity team at the Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA). He supported CEBA’s efforts to develop the next generation of Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) to enable more impactful voluntary market clean energy procurement. Before that, Sam worked at the Renewable Thermal Collaborative, a group of nonprofits, large energy customers, and energy suppliers striving to solve the market and policy barriers to decarbonizing thermal energy usage.

Sam holds a MA in International Affairs and Energy Policy from Georgetown University, and a BA in History from Tufts University.

Alex Coulombe
Program Associate, Team Coordinator

Alex has a background in environmental commodities trading with experience across voluntary and compliance markets globally. In her role at GMA, she manages stakeholders for the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance and coordinates business operations.

Prior to Neoteric/GMA, Alex worked at ACT Commodities where she focused on new product development within the voluntary market, generating new trading strategies for 24/7 renewable energy, sustainable aviation fuel certificates, and scope 3 environmental solutions. She supported carbon accounting for corporate customers, building customized environmental attribute inventories to align with industry standards including GHG Protocol, RE100, and SBTi.

Alex holds a BS in Economics and Environmental Studies from Northeastern University.

Stacey McCluskey
Executive Assistant & Analyst

Stacey has a background in finance with experience in consulting, data analysis and energy commodities. In her role at GMA, she directly supports the executive leadership team, acts as a liaison with internal and external stakeholders, and conducts analyst research across all of GMA’s sector initiatives.

Before joining GMA, Stacey worked for Global Partners LP, where she analyzed large-scale data on gasoline and ethanol products, synthesizing performance data and providing critical insights into energy markets. Earlier in her career, Stacey served as a consultant at Deloitte, where she conducted audit and assurance work to support financial statements and regulatory reports.

Stacey holds a BS in Finance with a minor in Law from Bentley University and an MS in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Johns Hopkins University.

Mari Hermerding
Administrative Assistant

Mari has a background in audio/visual environmental storytelling with experience filming, editing, and leading documentary production on under-reported global social justice issues. In her role at GMA, she directly supports the Chief Finance & Operations Officer, provides general administrative aid, creates balanced operational processes, and administers staff benefits and employee engagement and wellness programs.

Before joining GMA, Mari worked at Cuyuna Regional Medical Center (CRMC), where she assisted the Human Resources department and was active in both business partner and internal communications. Earlier in her career, Mari served as the Creative Co-Director of Extending the Link, where she supervised a team of students to create documentaries on various social justice topics. This past year, she traveled to the Bahamas to learn about climate-induced migration and interview people living on the frontlines.

Mari holds a BS in Environmental Studies and Peace Studies from the College of Saint Benedict.

Ingrid Irigoyen
President and CEO, Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) and Senior Director, Ocean and Climate, Aspen Institute Energy and Environment Program

Ingrid Irigoyen is the Senior Director, Ocean and Climate, for the Aspen Institute Energy and Environment Program (EEP), where she leads EEP’s work at the ocean-climate nexus and serves as a strategic advisor and facilitator for multi-stakeholder initiatives seeking to address climate, ocean, and coastal challenges. Her responsibilities include serving as the facilitator and project lead for Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels (coZEV), a coalition of major multinational consumer products companies and other freight buyers working to accelerate the pace of decarbonization in maritime shipping. She is also President and CEO of the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA), a non-profit organization and first-of-its-kind buyers group within the maritime sector with the mission accelerate commercial deployment of zero-emission shipping, enable economies of scale, and help cargo owners maximize emissions reduction beyond what any one freight buyer could accomplish alone.

Prior to joining Aspen in 2018, she was a Senior Mediator and Program Manager at Meridian Institute, where she devoted 13 years to the design, management, and facilitation of collaborative efforts to solve environmental and sustainability problems, with a special focus on oceans and coasts. Prior to this, among other positions, Ingrid was a John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellow with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She holds a Masters of Environmental Management from the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of New Hampshire. She lives in Bethesda, Maryland with her family and speaks Spanish fluently.

Alexia Kelly
Managing Director of the Carbon Policy and Markets Initiative, High Tide Foundation

Alexia Kelly is Managing Director of the Carbon Policy and Markets Initiative (CPMI) at High Tide Foundation. The CPMI accelerates ambitious climate action and capital mobilization through robust rules and guidance for voluntary corporate action and disclosures, and by building the next generation of high-integrity carbon and environmental services markets.

Alexia has worked for more than 17 years at the intersection of policy and finance to address the climate crisis. Prior to joining High Tide Foundation, she served as Director of Net Zero + Nature at Netflix, where she led the company’s inaugural greenhouse gas inventory, renewable energy strategy, Science Based Target and global carbon credit portfolio. She has held senior roles at the U.S. Department of State, where she served as lead negotiator to the UNFCCC on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. She has also held roles at the World Resources Institute, The David and Lucille Packard Foundation, The Climate Trust, and in private equity. She serves on multiple non-profit boards and holds a BA, a Master of Public Administration (MPA) and a Master in Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) from the University of Oregon.

Angela Churie Kallhauge
Executive Vice President, Impact at Environmental Defense Fund

Angela Churie Kallhauge is the Executive Vice President, Impact at Environmental Defense Fund. Her work is focused on using inclusive processes and economic approaches to achieve ambitious climate solutions that deliver equitable benefits to people around the world. Angela Churie Kallhauge joined EDF from the World Bank where she served as the head of the Secretariat of the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC) for five years. Before that she was at the Swedish Energy Agency where she worked for 14 years on climate change, energy and development issues. During her time at the Swedish Energy Agency, she worked on carbon market development issues, including portfolio development and capacity building in developing countries. She also served as the EU lead negotiator on adaptation and resilience issues under the UNFCCC for close to a decade and represented Sweden in the Adaptation Fund Board where she led the work on accreditation for direct access.

Angela also draws experience from the International Renewable Energy Agency, where she spent a couple of years leading the work to develop a climate change work program that places renewable energy action as a key part of climate change strategies. Prior to her engagement at the Swedish Agency, Angela spent close to a decade working at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and in Zimbabwe and Kenya with civil society organizations on climate, energy and development policy.

Kelley Kizzier
Director of Corporate Action and Markets, Bezos Earth Fund

Kelley Kizzier is the director of corporate action and markets at the Bezos Earth Fund. In this role, she works to identify strategies and solutions for ambitious corporate action, environmental markets, and hard to abate sectors. She was most recently Vice President for Global Climate at the Environmental Defense Fund, where she promoted ambitious and effective global climate and company action. Her work included multilateral climate agreements and global cooperation through carbon markets.
