Decarbonizing the trucking sector

Heavy Duty Trucking

Heavy-duty trucks constitute a significant and growing share of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Globally, heavy-duty vehicles account for more than 1.2Gt of CO2e emissions globally, while only approximately 4% of new medium- and heavy-duty vehicles sold are battery electric vehicles (BEV) or fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV). By bringing together trucking customers with carriers, truck manufacturers, and infrastructure providers, GMA Trucking channels funds for low-carbon trucks in regions where deployment is otherwise lagging.

GMA runs GMA Trucking, a buyers alliance that leverages corporate demand to decarbonize heavy-duty trucking, with a focus on procurement of zero-emissions trucking service attributes. With member companies from tech, e-commerce, consumer packaged goods, and other sectors, GMA Trucking has a proven record of directing demand through multi-year contractual agreements that enable carriers to purchase and deploy zero-emission1 heavy-duty vehicles. This form of offtake is made possible by the book and claim system developed by the Smart Freight Centre’s Market Based Measures Framework and GMA’s expansion on best practices for zero-emission certificates issuance and reporting. GMA Trucking is proud to have the Smart Freight Centre as a strategic partner for the program to help build on MBM application and battery electric truck expertise.

1 “Zero-emission” trucks refers to tailpipe emissions only, not inclusive of upstream manufacturing emissions.

Pilot Procurement

On December 17, 2024, GMA Trucking launched a request for proposal (RFP) for zero-emission trucking service attributes. This first-ever joint procurement targeted the deployment of Class 8 battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell trucks in the continental US. Through the RFP, GMA Trucking sought to connect US carriers with corporate customers ready to take meaningful action to address their road freight emissions.

GMA Trucking is excited to share that the contracts for the pilot RFP have been executed and will lead to the deployment approximately 40 new battery electric trucks in Texas, the largest known deployment in the state!
