Webinar | How MBIs can enable scalable and credible low‑emission fertilizer markets
Fertilizer production represents an important Scope 3 decarbonization opportunity for food and beverage companies. While the current focus on regenerative agricultural practices is essential, reducing emissions in fertilizer production is sometimes overlooked – despite being both a necessary and complementary lever. For many food and agriculture brands, undertaking interventions to reduce emissions associated with producing fertilizers presents challenges. Market-based instruments (MBIs) offer an opportunity to address value chain barriers to fertilizer decarbonization and unlock much-needed finance. MBI structures such as book and claim are beginning to gain traction, but for such approaches to be credible, they must comply with integrity criteria. The Center for Green Market Activation (GMA) co-hosted a webinar with the Value Change Initiative (VCI) to explore the opportunities for MBIs to unlock credible fertilizer decarbonization in food and agriculture supply chains. This webinar addresses:
- The importance of fertilizer decarbonization and the challenges associated with undertaking and claiming Scope 3 interventions
- Potential MBI solutions to enable credible low-emission fertilizer procurement and necessary credibility criteria
- Emerging examples of how food and agriculture brands are using MBIs to support fertilizer decarbonization
