Decarbonizing the trucking sector

Heavy Duty Trucking

GMA has recently launched GMA Trucking, a buyers alliance for zero emissions trucking service attributes with the goal of accelerating the decarbonization of heavy-duty trucking. GMA Trucking is supporting first-of-their-kind, scalable partnerships focused on getting battery electric vehicle (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) class 8 trucks on the road.  Heavy-duty vehicles account for more than 1.2Gt of CO2e emissions globally, while less than 1% of new medium- and heavy-duty vehicles sold are BEVs or FCEVs. By bringing together trucking customers with truck manufacturers, low-carbon fuel providers, and fleet owners and operators, GMA Trucking will be able to fund low carbon trucks in regions where deployment is otherwise not possible.

Similar to GMA’s other initiatives, the trucking program will seek to procure environmental attribute certificates (EACs) for zero emission trucking services through a book-and-claim system, enabling a wide array of shippers to fund innovative projects as a way to reduce their Scope 3 emissions from on-road logistics and catalyze decarbonization in this hard-to-abate sector. Members work in collaboration with GMA to develop a rigorous, transparent system that enables them to invest in road freight transport decarbonization.

Request for Proposal

As of December 17, 2024, GMA Trucking in partnership with Smart Freight Centre is launching a request for proposal (RFP) for zero-emission trucking service attributes. This first-ever joint procurement targets the deployment of approximately 250 Class 8 battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell trucks representing up to 14 million miles traveled per year. Through the RFP, GMA Trucking seeks to connect US carriers with corporate customers ready to take meaningful action to address their road freight emissions. An informational webinar about the RFP was hosted January 17, 2025.  View the webinar recording.
